Red Hot Habitat
Vermillion, carmine, cinnabar, ruby, brick or crimson…any shade of red is one of the hottest colors you can use in an interior. Red is associated with power, energy, strength and determination and in some cultures it denotes purity, joy and celebration. In China, it is the color of happiness and prosperity. For interiors, use bold reds that pop against a neutral background – using it as an accent in some rooms for just the right spark or make it the dominant color for a sense of drama. Get passionate about your home and give it the “VIP red carpet” treatment. You’ll find yourself in love with your interiors once again.

A red ottoman and a couple of red pillows are all this neutral family room needs to turn up the heat.

The dining room chairs add the right amount of drama without being over-the-top. Notice the red trim in the curtains and red accents in the rug - they complement and do not compete with the boldness of the chairs.

This breakfast nook is a vibrant place to wake-up and begin the day.

A few Asian-inspired accents in red to bring on happy dreams.

The chairs pull out the red from the original art over the mantel.

Making a Splash
We had a photo shoot for the second in our series entitled “Interiors for Every Taste.” The images depict our philosophy that design should reflect the style, taste and personalities of our clients. Each features a different design “taste.” The one we were setting up on this particular day will appear in the August issue of Gentry Magazine. We decided to show an outdoor interior since that’s where most of us want to be during the sunny summer months.

Lea McIntosh assisted with the food styling.

Dean Biryini photographed the final vignette.

Work in progress.

Just a small part of this home's outdoor interiors.
After this sneak peek, can you guess what the headline will be?

Interiors for Every Taste
Do you favor a particular design style or do you like the combination platter featuring a mix of tasty styles? Whatever your preference, the Miller Design Co. designers are connoisseurs at creating spaces that will appeal to every design gourmet. Our latest ad highlights a very modern morsel – a minimalist European style kitchen for a modern villa. We asked Gabby Feuersinger of Cake Coquette to design a Mondrian-style cake for the shot and Bloomingdale’s Stanford provided the crystal.

What’s your taste preference when it comes to the design of your home?

Mod-Mediterranean
Many newer homes in the Bay Area Peninsula favor a Mediterranean style that has been borrowed from a variety of architectural sources including Spanish, Italian and French Country influences. But what if you adore more modern interiors? Can contemporary style work within traditional architecture?
This was the challenge a young couple with two young children put to Jacob Scherer of Miller Design Co. “They like a more modern vibe and already had a collection of very modern pieces of art,” says Jacob. “They asked me to pull together a clean, kid-friendly look.” To accomplish this, Jacob worked with the architecture, blending both styles to deliver a Mod-Mediterranean home.
“I pulled neutral colors from the natural elements in the house and tried entirely new layouts. I used clean lined furnishings and did not over do the color – letting the accessories and selected walls pop with warm, sunny colors. The scale of the furnishings play a huge role in making the expansive rooms feel more comfortable and intimate. The fabrics are a mix of geometrics and textured floral patterns satisfying the modern yin with the traditional yang. Everything is kid-tested and durable.”
Once again, Miller Design Co. creates interiors for every taste and lifestyle. Check out the va-va-voom of this Mod-Mediterranean home.
